  1. The Vietnam War (1954-75), was a war between 
  2. communist North Vietnam and US-backed South 
  3. Vietnam. 200,000 South Vietnamese soldiers, 
  4. 1 million North Vietnamese soldiers, and 
  5. 500,000 civilians were killed. 56,555 US 
  6. soldiers were killed 1961-75, a fifth of them 
  7. by their own troops. The war destroyed 50% of 
  8. the country's forest cover and 20% of 
  9. agricultural land.
